History of GFA

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Formation

Knowing first-hand the history of GFA is a first step to having debates about the existence of the body that regulates football in Ghana. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) was established in 1957. It became a member of FIFA in 1958. Similarly, it joined the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 1960.

The new name Ghana Football Association shortly called GFA is a replacement for what used to be the Gold Coast Football Association, a body at the time that Ghana was called the Gold Coast was the regulator of football in the confines of the country.

Kurt Okraku is the current leader of the organization. Prosper Harrison Addo holds the position of General Secretary and these two positions are very important in the administration of the Ghana Football Association.

Ghana Football Association Genesis

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is the organization in charge of football in Ghana. It took over from the Gold Coast Football Association, which was one of the oldest football associations in Africa and was established in 1920.

Football was brought to the Gold Coast by European traders in the late 1800s and as it became more popular, several amateur clubs were formed along the coast.

Cape Coast and Accra were the first colonial cities in sub-Saharan Africa to have official leagues in the Gold Coast.

After a slow start in 1915, the league started in 1922, with the Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club winning and getting the Guggisberg shield, which is named after Sir Gordon Guggisberg, a progressive British governor at that time who started the Accra Football League.

Ghana National Teams

The Ghana Football Association has nine national teams that represent Ghana in various football competitions. These teams are called Black Stars, Black Stars “B“, Black Starlets, Black Queens, Black Meteors, Black Maidens, Black Satellites, Black Princesses, and Black Sharks.

These Ghanaian national teams are different from each other in very special ways and have their own specialties in terms of age range and game category.
